Global Buzz Report: 2013 09 01

Resumen de Online Gatherings , August 2013         (Click here for English)

Los objetivos de estas reuniones fueron: to connect ICAs and Ica colleagues with each other, and help to build and strenghthen relationships between them. To share information and facilitate peer to peer support and collaboration among ICA s and ICA colleagues. To hold ICAI accountable to its members, and seek input and support to strengthen our global network and advance our global mission.

También saber que Japon has permission to raise Money from individuals and companies for ToP training ongoing.

Y considerar how does Policy expand our opportunity, rather than limit us, and also to be clear about whar are the goals of establishing policies.

Summary of ICAI Online Regional Gatherings, August 2013

Isabel dela Maza, ICAI Vice President for the Americas, Chile

During August 19, 20 and 21 we had ICAI Online Gatherings by regions. The first one on the 19th was with Africa, MENA and Europe, facilitated by Martin Gilbraith and with technological support provided by Larry Philbrook. The second meeting took place with the Americas, facilitated by Martin Gilbraith , Isabel de la Maza and  Seva Gandhi. The third one took place with Asia and Asia Pacific, facilitated by Martin Gilbraith and Krishna Shrestha.

The objectives of these meetings were: to connect ICAs  and ICA colleagues with each other, and help to build and strengthen relationships among them; to share information and facilitate peer to peer support and collaboration among ICAs and ICA colleagues; and to hold ICAI accountable to its members and seek input and support in order to strengthen our global network and advance our global mission.

The  issues treated included reports of each National ICA and a report on the situation of ICA International (about members, activities, finances, reflections). We also talked about the survey (Global Network Survey Findings), about regional communications (Global and Regional Communications), about a procedure on Global Policy development (Draft procedure for global policy development) and criteria for ICAI funding of member initiatives (Criteria for ICAI financial support to regional meetings).

The expectations of the participants to the meeting were in general, to learn, inform themselves, outspread their activities and interconnect among Regional ICAs and among the people associated to our Global Community.

A total of 25 ICA reports were received from ICAs from different REGIONS and countries, all of which are included in a single report and can be read separated by country.  In general we can appreciate that there is a lot of activity going on around the world, that there is good energy to connect with each other, and a lot of creativity and enthusiasm to communicate virtually and in person, post Nepal 2013.  A team concerned with Imaginal Education also reported on its dialogue online through Google Hangout. A Community of Practice on Education was gathered after the Conference in Nepal. We have to mention too the great impact that Google Hangouts facilitated by ICA Ukraine are having, with a diversity of guests every week. There was also an ICA Europe meeting in Paris in March that included some sessions on ToP training. There have been some ToP sessions with ICA Ukraine and with ICA Mena (in Russian and Arabic). There is a group of ToP Facilitators in Shanghai, a Chinese group and there is another group organizing in Beijing. We can see that there is a lot of need for ToP training for a new generation of Trainers in Paris, China, South America and Africa. We have to mention the very interesting job of ICA USA on sustainability (Neighborhood Work on Sustainability), the work on HIV Project at Zimbawe and other African countries. In Chile we are starting again with Schools for Leaders for groups with different disabilities. Guatemala has been able to solve its problems with the new registration of its organization with the Government. 100 women in India have been trained and 3 girls from the ICA Chikale School there were accepted to study Engineering at university. Besides all this, ICA Bangladesh is progressing with its Programs on Community empowerment, training, facilitation, research and advocacy. ICA France, ICA Croatia and an ICA Pakistan are emerging.  Japan now has permission to raise money from individuals and companies for ongoing ToP training.  Among other things in Canada they are having leadership development work for Hospitalized people and for non-profit sectors.

In addition, communication strategies (virtual and personal) are getting better as technology changes quickly. We can mention among other things the Winds and Waves Magazine, as well as the information that ICAI members Survey has managed to gather and share. We are glad about the innovation that Google hangout method means but we have to mention that there are still some difficulties for some Regions to communicate virtually, as is the case of some African countries and some in Asia and South America. Their problem is that they are unable to contact through the Adobe System that the Internet demands on a broad band.  This is very expensive in some countries, besides the fact that they also have restricted electricity time. In South America Skype and Facebook are good ways to communicate. It still is a good way to communicate by just sending e-mails, use Skype, cell phones or just ordinary telephones. We must consider in Global communication codes, ways and the timing of each culture in order to be able to understand any message. We have concluded that the best would be to have permanent communication with all members of ICA International and that they would report frequently on their activities, so that we all could be aware of their activities.

About the Draft Procedure for Global Policy Development, the most interesting part has been the dialogue it has started and the way it has enriched the policy we have to follow. Mainly we hope for a clear and visible policy on ToP Methods training, but of course we need to talk more about that, as well as considering how does Policy expand our opportunity, rather than limit us, and also to be clear about what are the goals of establishing policies.

Criteria for ICAI financial support: the majority agreed on continuing investing on a better communication system for those countries that haven’t been able to communicate effectively because of their problems to connect with the Internet, as is the case with Africa. That would allow improved ICA International connection with its members.

The next steps we must start thinking of are: start to dialogue in order to organize the 2016 Conference; continue to support ToP Methodology in those countries that would like to be trained in it; continue to dialogue and work on sustainable development, continue to better our intercultural understanding; better our peer to peer relationships and in general our communication with the Global Community.
