Dans le cadre des activités du mois de mai 2021 ICA-CI s’est basé sur les programmes agricoles et éducation qui a permis d’avoir des résultats ci-dessous.

Le programme agricole a été centré sur les travaux d’agroforesterie et particulièrement les récoltes des régimes de graines de palmes. Les entretiens des champs de palmier à huile dans la plupart des villages  et d’oranger  dans le village de N’gorankro sont les principales activités que font les bénéficiaires.

Le bureau de ICA-CI a aussi installé une planche de laitue à titre expérimental auprès de son bureau par le technicien en agroforesterie. Cette expérience est faite avec du compost de fiente de poulet parmi les nombreux types de compost qui sont enseignés aux bénéficiaires.

La première récolte des régimes de palmier à huile sur le site du bureau de ICA-CI ont été faite dans le mois de mai 2021 par un spécialiste venu du village de Moutcho en appui au technicien de ICA-Côte d’Ivoire.

Au titre de l’éducation les 18  élèves de la première promotion du centre préscolaire Sainte Sato de Brobo ont célébrés le 20 mai leur fête de fin d’année scolaire. Cette cérémonie a eu lieu en présence du Conseiller Fofana Représentant le Directeur Régional du Ministère de la femme, de la famille et de l’enfant structure dont le centre est sous la tutelle. Le Conseiller a profité de cette occasion pour sensibiliser les parents d’élèves sur l’importance et les avantages de la scolarisation des enfants au préscolaire.

Il a expliqué que la mission de l’état et particulièrement de leur Ministère est de voir tous les petits  enfants commencer l’école  par les classes du préscolaire car cela stimule l’éveille de l’enfant et le familiarise à l’écriture, la lecture et le dessin, il contribue à aider les parents et les enfants  à avoir de nouveaux amis. Aussi l’école préscolaire est le cadre ou sont étudiés les comportements des enfants pour une bonne orientation future à l’école primaire.

Les parents de cette première promotion ont félicité les animatrices et toute la Direction de ICA Côte d’Ivoire pour l’ouverture de ce centre préscolaire dans le quartier Belleville de Kouadiokonankro. Nous avons enregistré quatre enfants qui iront à l’école primaire à la rentrée prochaine.

As part of the activities for the month of May 2021 ICA-CI has based itself on the agricultural and education programs which have resulted in the results below.
The agricultural program focused on agroforestry work and particularly harvesting palm seed bunches. Maintenance of oil palm fields in most villages and orange trees in N’gorankro village are the main activities carried out by beneficiaries.
The ICA-CI office also installed a lettuce bed on an experimental basis near its office by the agroforestry technician. This experiment is done with chicken manure compost among the many types of compost that are taught to beneficiaries.

The first harvest of oil palm bunches on the site of the ICA-CI office was carried out in May 2021 by a specialist from the village of Moutcho in support of the technician from ICA-Côte d'Ivoire.

In terms of education, the 18 students of the first class of the Saint Sato preschool in Brobo celebrated their end of school year celebration on May 20. This ceremony took place in the presence of Councilor Fofana representing the Regional Director of the Ministry of Women, Family and Children, the structure of which the center is under the supervision. The Advisor took the opportunity to sensitize parents of students on the importance and benefits of preschool education for children.

He explained that the mission of the state and particularly of their Ministry is to see all small children start school with preschool classes because this stimulates the awakening of the child and familiarizes him with writing, reading and drawing, it helps to help parents and children to have new friends. Also the preschool is the setting where the behaviors of children are studied for a good future orientation in primary school.

The parents of this first class congratulated the animators and the entire management of ICA Côte d'Ivoire for the opening of this preschool center in the Belleville district of Kouadiokonankro. We have registered four children who will go to primary school next school year.

GHANA:

Promoting Mangroves as Protection against
Erosion and Coastal Flooding

Background
Ghana’s coastline stretches for almost 550 km and consists of embayed coasts, rocky headlands sand bars and spits. On the eastern side, sandy spits, enclosed coastal lagoons and the River Volta enters the sea. On the Western side however, wide beaches backed by coastal lagoons can be found. Ghana however faces one major challenge with its coastline – COASTAL EROSION! Over the years, a large number of communities have been forced out of what they consider “home” to resettle at other places in spite of the inconvenience. This has been the plight of many coastal communities in Ghana.

Mangroves as buffer protection
Mangrove forests have proven to be an essential part of coastal ecosystems. Aside from medicinal, livelihood and agroforestry purposes, mangroves also provide protection against flooding and erosion. Unfortunately, mangrove swamps in Ghana are limited in area and distribution and hardly develop beyond the shrub stage. Additionally, mangrove swamps are poor in diversity. Urban and agricultural development as well as overexploitation for livelihood purposes are believed to be the main causes of mangrove degradation in Ghana.

“Mangroves as Protection against Erosion and Coastal Flooding in Selected West African Coastal Countries” Project
The mangrove project will be implemented within two areas in Ghana which are the Anlo Beach in the Western Region and Anyanui community as well as adjacent communities towards the estuary within the Volta Delta. On the whole, the project focuses on the capacity of mangroves to reduce erosion and coastal flooding along the coast of Guinea-Conakry and Ghana. For two selected study areas in Ghana, hydrodynamic and morphological modelling will be used to provide insight on the capability of mangroves to reduce coastal erosion, wave heights (both wind and swell waves) and inundation depths. Additionally, a selection of mangrove species will be included in modelling efforts which will later be used for restoration activities.

Establishing fruitful Partnerships to achieve results
The project is a partnership between The Development Institute (The DI) and the University of Cape Coast (UCC). Research has begun along the coastline. Both The DI and the UCC teams visited the Anlo beach community in the Western Region from the 18th to the 21st of May, 2021. Both teams had the opportunity to engage the chief of Anlo beach, community leaders and some opinion leaders to brief them about the project and also establish rapport for successful implementation. Two main activities were carried out during the field visit. First of all, bathymetric data was taken along the river system that surrounds communities in the project area. Secondly, aerial images of the area were also captured to help in preparing a landuse/landcover map to aid in understanding the dynamics of the place.
At the end of the field visit, two main results were achieved. First of all, both teams and the leaders together with communities came to a consensus to work together for the successful implementation of the project. Secondly, both teams had a better understanding of the current situation in the area. The same research has been scheduled to take place in the Volta Delta from the 2nd to the 6th of June, 2021.

ICA Taiwan April May 2021

Covid reality finally caught up to Taiwan 3 weeks ago so we had to postpone our public trainings in May and June we hope to be back on in July.  West’s and Philbrook’s got our first vaccine shot.  We are all well.   Larry had his second eye surgery and recovered well.

Virtual programs are still on.  Preparing for GFM 1 and 2,  3 virtual dialogue sessions and the community development module in June.
