AUSTRALIA:
Location: Restorative Practices International
Last week on the Sunshine Coast, north of Brisbane, the inaugural conference,
'Best Practice in Restorative Justice , Transformational Change' was held. This
conference organized by the newly formed NGO, Association for World-wide
Practitioners, Restorative Practices International, RPI, brought together 270
delegates from many parts of the world, who found themselves engaged in a
'spirit-filled, from the heart' event.
For those of you new to the terms
Restorative Practices RP, Restorative Justice RJ, Youth Conferencing, these are
all part of a rapidly growing global RP movement. While the Restorative Justice
movement had its origins in the Criminal Justice sector, it has gone way beyond
that now, with these processes being used to build relationships after
wrong-doing through re-integration, and to cultivate cultures of relationship
building, as alternatives to punitive, un-democratic processes so often seen.
This member-driven Association brings together practitioners across the sectors
of Justice, Education, Community and Policing.
Jackie Huggins, dynamic
Australian Indigenous leader, and John Braithwaite, well-known for his
pioneering work in the Restorative Justice field, outlined the need, and steps
already underway, for developing appropriate Restorative Processes with
Indigenous communities and in the war-torn region of South East Asia and the
Pacific, in particular, which highlighted the undeniable challenge that faces us
all.
The next RPI conference will be in mid-2009 in Vancouver. For more
information check out the RPI conference website, as papers are uploaded, and
the website is further developed. www.RPIassociation.com . There is
interest in RPI being a part of the ICA Global Conference, Unlocking the
Potential to Create a New world Together, in Japan, in November, 2008.
PS. As a
member of ICAA, I have been involved in implementing RP in the education sector
over many years, and see very strong links with ICA's global task.

services in the community.
UNAIDS Social Mobilization Adviser Dr. Lazeena asked
ICA Bangladesh to design a 3 day training program for HIV/AIDS workers and
affected. Aziz is going to customize a program considering their need.
Abdul Bari
and Aziz discussed at the office about the forthcoming events and FDR
issues.
Ripon and Mehdi facilitated the idea of alternative fundraising for ICA
Bangladesh through charity shops and selling of garment products by ICA
colleagues in different countries like Australia, USA, Canada, UK and so on. In
2005 John and Tatwa during their visit in Dhaka suggested us to think of the
idea. Oxfam has such kind of program so far. Tatwa informed us that ICA Nepal
has initiated already this idea.
Aziz is planning to organize some other training
courses for ICA staffs and members during Maguires stay as they will be
volunteering in December.

of other organisations in Nepal organised a series of programmes on the occasion
of UN International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. On Oct. 15, ICA Nepal
participated in the 'Press Meet' organised by the organising committee at Hotel

a procession in Kathmandu organised jointly by Civil Society Ogranisations. ICA
itself organised similar programmes in 3 other districts where ICA is
implementing human development projects aiming at poverty eradication.
In
Kathmandu, ICA also actively participated in a seminar where many people spoke
on the importance of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty. There
was discussion on improving the lives of the poorest and most marginalized
people. On Oct. 17th, we gathered for a musical programme and to create a big
human circle for STAND UP and SPEAK OUT to make governments listen to its
commitments on working on meeting Millennium Development Goals.

Facilitative Leadership
ICA Nepal's Atma Ram Timsina and Madan Raj Bista

The second group of Promotores have built their model homes this week in their
sectors and there is a lot of excitement now in all 30 sectors as the temporary
houses are now visible to all of the nearly 2,000 families who will be building
theirs in the next few weeks. Meanwhile, fifteen sectores are now fully
organized into family teams of 5 each, and have started two family teams in each
sector with building their houses. Now the challenge for the ICA staff is to
keep up with the delivery of the huge amount of materials needed for the
building process. Spirits are high all around.

by Betty Pesek.
Participant Sandra True reports that facilitators, Mirja Hanson
and Duncan Holmes, reflected the skill and grace that brought honor to the deep
theological source of ICA processes and lead us to authentic dialogue regarding
the three focus questions posed.
What does ICA-USA need to do to support and
serve emerging change networks?
What does ICA-USA need to do and be as part of
the global family of national ICA's?
What does ICA-USA need to do to preserve and
share 40 plus years of wisdom contained in the Global Archives and embedded in
each pioneering spirit?
The product of the small groups addressing these
questions reported as 'advice to the Board and Staff' was amazingly similar.
About ten broad categories were identified in the cross gestalt. The official,
final report will be the source for detail but arenas included...conciliation,
future relationships, ICAI, communication, participation, research, and the care
and preservation of the archives.
A rousing celebration Saturday evening
included the showing of a new DVD of classic ICA films...The World of Human
Development and a 1964 CBS program about the Ecumenical Institute entitled The
Bold Community.
