DOCUMENTATION TREK

Dick Alton of IC&A USA visited Nigeria from August 6 – 9, 2007 as part of the African ICA HIV/AIDS Fund raising program. The purpose is to help document the work and lay the ground work for future program and funding opportunities.

During the week, Opebi Senior Grammar School had 21 science students who are part of a 40 member Anti-AIDS group went through a four day course. The four days was centered on facilitative leaders training, HIV/AIDS learning and life skills. On the last day the head of VCT training for the local government came and gave them a highly interactive session on some of the basics of testing and the working of the virus. It was amazing to see what 15 and 16 years can grasp when you challenge them.

The highlight of the week was a flight to Abuja to visit both USAID and Management Science for Health (MSH) a new partner in the USA. A meeting with the Project Director found many possible areas for collaboration: MSH is presently working on new Indigenous NGO Training/capacity building to handle USA Government funding. MOST is MSH NGO management tool: assessment is a self assessment so can think about your organisation, rate them, identify six top issues- good process, MSH just facilitates the process; 2) working with Government-HIV/AIDS, TB and Neglected diseases; 3) Women and OVC;4) Fellowship- people who know about HIV/AIDS and management of NGOs; and 5)Treatment-VCT/Pediatrics/ARV/Palliative care/TB. Right now have 10 sites- 2 States with a results-oriented Funding- do well and get more funding next time.

The visit with USAID was to look at Nigeria USAID strategies in light of preparation for a PEPFAR New Partner Initiative (NPI) submission for October.

PERU:

Location: Chincha Earthquake Relief

While the second group of 30 Promoters graduated from their 5 day leadership course in the Azpitia Training Center, the first group of 30 Promoters built model homes in each of their 15 sectors.  The homes are really quite delightfully roomy and have already taken on the warmth of a home with each family creating its unique style in its 18 square meters.  At about US dollar 80 each, the homes are a remarkable achievement, and 100 percent constructed by the people themselves.  This week 15 more models will be built and a 100 percent census will be conducted by the Promoters to determine the total number of homes to be built.  The team is excited about the obvious human impact of the Project, and is already seeing many further uses of the 30-2-5 method of organizing a community project.

ICAI:

Location: Montréal

The team in Montreal continued working on 2008 work plans and budgets. A staff meeting was held to discuss work plans and participation in upcoming regional meetings in Lome and Dhaka.

Lambert, Mike, and Sarah Farina participated in the UNEP Convention on Biological Diversity meeting here in Montreal, attending seminars on Access and Benefit-sharing and Capacity-building, as well as a Global Forest Coalition side-event on problems facing and possible solutions for biopiracy.

The Working Gifts program is coming together beautifully, with positive responses received already! We're excited to launch this in November, and are expecting great things, thanks to the work of Sarah Farina, Sarah Miller, Peter Ellins, and all the participating ICAs.

Response to the push for ICA revivals has also been encouraging, with interest popping up around the globe.

You are also invited to review the 2005/06 external audit, which is now posted online, at http://www.ica-international.org/annualreports.htm.
